Stop #3 on the It's Wes Smith Yo #MagicFugu tour includes a supporting slot for the mighty Stanton Warriors. It takes a lot of work to make events happen, so I dug behind the scenes a bit to find out who's making the gears turn. I was able to get a few words with DJ Loomer of The Cruz Coalition, who is essential in promoting the Rebel Bass show this Friday, March 20th @ King King in Los Angeles, CA. Check it below.
What is the The Cruz Coalition?
The Cruz Coalition is a partnership between Art Cruz and David Loomstein (Loomer) that produces and promotes live music events in Southern California, and manages production and staffing for dance music events around the world. International events include Coachella, EDC (LA, Las Vegas, Mexico, New York, Puerto Rico), Beyond Wonderland (LA, SF), Lightning in a Bottle, Envision Festival, Boogaloo Mountain Jam and more. What other shows have you produced in your area?
ONE LA with Elite Force / Simon Shackleton, Opulent Temple White Party LA with Crystal Method (2013), Lee Coombs (2014), Funkagenda (2015), Dark Karnival LA with Mafia Kiss (2014). So, we met at Burning Man, I hear you've been a few times, any memorable moments?
2015 will be my 10th year running. So many memorable moments, but one that happened in my first year involved a naked run across the playa to the famous Belgian Waffle on the afternoon before they burned it. I was permitted to cross the police line around it and have an unguarded (literally and figuratively) moment with one of the great functional art pieces I've ever experienced. Special. Tell me a little about your DJ/Producer life?
I began DJing with the intention to produce, and have been fortunate to play in front of so many great audiences at shows and festivals in the U.S. and beyond. There is a common element to my sound - it's minimalist, with a funky, driving breakbeat that may or may not occasionally morph into dirty, phat house. Lyrics are spare yet intentional.
Just getting rolling as a producer, with a ton of edits, six original remixes (releases on illeven:eleven, Teknical Funk, Booty Trax) and counting. I've spent the last few months on sound design and production work-flow and am loving the results jamming with four different, connected instruments in the studio. This will carry over into a live show that will offer plenty of spontaneity and surprises. What's Next for You and your Crew?
We are setting our spring lineup of dance nights in LA, and participating in a few of California's favorite home-grown festivals.
Awesome stuff David, see you all Friday and at the next Burn;)
